What Is Credit Life Insurance and Is It Mandatory in South Africa?

When applying for a personal loan or vehicle finance in South Africa, you will likely see a line item for Credit Life Insurance. Many borrowers gloss over this fee without realizing what it covers or their legal rights regarding it.

What Does Credit Life Insurance Cover?

Credit life insurance is designed to pay off or cover your outstanding loan balance if you experience unforeseen life events. Under the National Credit Act (NCA) regulations, comprehensive policy coverage typically includes:

  • Death or Permanent Disability: The remaining debt is settled in full.

  • Temporary Disability or Unplanned Unemployment/Retrenchment: Monthly loan repayments are covered for a specified period (typically up to 12 months, or until you regain employment).

Is It Mandatory?

Yes and No. Lenders in South Africa are legally allowed to require credit life insurance as a condition for approving an unsecured personal loan. However, you are not obligated to take the lender’s in-house policy.

Your Rights under the National Credit Act (NCA)

You have the right to substitute the credit provider’s policy with your own existing life or income-protection policy, provided it meets the required coverage threshold. Shopping around or using an existing policy can save you hundreds of Rands in monthly administrative premiums over the term of your loan.
